Kesaria's great stupa dominates the flatland of East Champaran district, 40 km from Vaishali and 110 km from Patna — a towering brick mound whose surviving shell rises to 32 metres above the fields, among the tallest Buddhist stupas in the world.
History & culture
Begun in the 3rd century BCE and rebuilt through later centuries, the Kesaria stupa marks another chapter of the Buddha's travels in the region — the site's size and the excavated votive stupas and epigraphs linking it to the region's monastic age; the mound now stands as the north of India's least-known giant of brick.
