The park's story runs with the royal duck-hunting reserve of the Bharatpur maharajas — the 19th-century game reserve transformed by the 1960s–80s conservation and the 1985 UNESCO recognition, with the park's story of the Siberian cranes' visits of the past; the park's role as one of the world's finest birding sites, with its 370 species and the cycle rickshaws of the trails, gives Keoladeo its birding-wetland character.
