Kargil lies in the Kargil district of Ladakh at about 2,676 m, 200 km from Leh and 200 km from Srinagar — the transit town of the region's middle, its war memorial, the markets and the river country set on the Suru's valley.

History & culture

The town's story runs with the region's crossroads history — the old halt of the Leh–Srinagar route, with the town's role in the 1999 Kargil war and the memorials of the martyrs (the Kargil War Memorial at Dras); the town's modern role as the transit of the region's roads and the market town of the Balti and the Dard peoples, with the Mulbekh monastery on the route, gives Kargil its war-town character.
