Kanheri Caves lie within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai, 10 km from Borivali and 40 km from the city centre — the Buddhist cave complex of the hills, its chaityas, the stupas and the carved halls set on the green ridges of the park.

History & culture

The caves' story runs with the 1st-century Buddhist monastic life of the region — the complex of over 100 caves of the Hinayana and the Mahayana eras, with the great chaitya hall and the water cisterns and the rock-cut stupas; the caves' history of the Buddhist trade-route learning (the site of the monks and the merchants of the ancient Konkan), gives Kanheri its monastic-heritage character.
