Geography & terrain

Kanha NP lies in the Mandla and the Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh, 160 km from Jabalpur and 250 km from Nagpur — the tiger reserve of the central highlands, its sal forests, the meadows and the rivers set on the Maikal's slopes.

History & culture

The park's story runs with the 1955 national park and the 1973 Project Tiger — one of the country's first tiger reserves, with the park's role in the barasingha's (the hard-ground swamp deer) rescue from near-extinction; the park's story as the landscape of Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli tales of the region's folklore, with its meadows and the Bamni Dadar views, gives Kanha its tiger-meadow character.
