Jorhat is the tea capital of Assam — the city at the heart of the state's plantation belt, 230 km east of Guwahati, its green town ringed by famous estates, with the Nimati ferry ghat on its Brahmaputra side opening the way to Majuli island.

Founded in the early 19th century as the last capital of the Ahom kingdom, Jorhat grew into the 'tea city' as the region's gardens built the world's tea trade; its Tocklai station is among the oldest tea-research centres on earth, and its museum keeps the Ahom and tea histories of the valley.
