Jawhar's first surprise is the palace — an art-deco bungalow of a forgotten princely state, standing proud above the town with its gardens and views. But the real treasure is in the villages: walls covered in white stick-figure murals, horses and dancers and harvest scenes painted in the geometric Warli style, and the artists themselves, who will sit with you and paint a small piece to take home. The viewpoint over the Damanganga valley at sunset is a deep green sea of forest and river, and in monsoon the Dabhosa falls thunder below the town. It's a weekend that leaves you with paint on your fingers and a new understanding of what art can be — not decoration, but a village's way of keeping its stories.
