Jawalamukhi lies in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh at about 600 m, 35 km from Kangra and 180 km from Chandigarh — the eternal-flame temple of the goddess, its blue fire and the hill setting set on the Beas country's edge.

The temple's story runs with the goddess Jwalamukhi's eternal flames — the shrine of the nine flames of the natural gas that the tradition worships as the goddess's presence, with the temple's history of the Mughal and the Sikh patrons' visits (the emperor Akbar's attempt to douse the flame in the legend); the temple's role in the Shakti-peeth circuit of the region, with its copper roof and the golden dome, gives Jawalamukhi its flame-shrine character.
