Janjira Fort lies on an island in the Arabian Sea off Murud in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, 140 km from Mumbai — the great sea fort of the Konkan, its walls and the cannons set on the rock amid the waves.

History & culture

The fort was built in the 17th century by the Siddis of Janjira — the sea power of the Konkan coast, with the fort's impregnable walls of the laterite stone rising straight from the sea and the 500 cannons of its prime; the fort's history of the Siddi state's independence from the Mughals and the Marathas, with its gates and the freshwater pools within the rock, gives Janjira its sea-fort drama.
