Jageshwar lies in the Almora district of Uttarakhand at about 1,870 m, 36 km from Almora and 450 km from Delhi — the ancient temple town of the Kumaon, its group of stone shrines and the deodar forests set in the valley of the Koshi river in the region's hills.
History & culture
The town's story runs with the 7th–12th century temple-building of the Kumaon — the cluster of about 125 ancient temples of the Shaivite worship, with the region's history of the Katyuri and the Chand dynasties' patronage; the town's role as one of the twelve Jyotirlinga sites of the tradition, with the annual Maha Shivratri fair, gives Jageshwar its ancient-sacred character.
