History & culture

The reserve was established in 1976 as the Anamalai sanctuary and renamed for the prime minister — the tiger reserve of the Ghats, with the reserve's history of the tea estates and the tribal settlements of the region, and the later additions of the Anamudi Shola park; the reserve's modern role in the Western Ghats' wildlife corridors, with the Top Slip and the Manamboli viewpoints, gives Indira Gandhi WLS its forest reserve character.
