History & culture
The gate was designed by Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1931 — the memorial of the 90,000 Indian soldiers of the First World War, with the gate's name of the Amar Jawan Jyoti added in the 1971 war's honour; the gate's modern life as the city's gathering point of the evenings, with the Kartavya Path's parades and the Republic Day's ceremonies, gives India Gate its national-memorial character.
