History & culture
The mountain valleys were medieval hill-kingdoms — the Kullu kings, the Chamba and Kangra dynasties — that the British colonised as the summer capitals of the Raj, building Shimla's civic core and the rail-to-the-clouds onwards; the Tibetan diaspora gathered at Dharamshala from 1960, and the paragliding, trekking and café culture of the modern decades added the state's workation reputation.

- The hill roads are long — 5+ hours between towns; plan one move a day
- Spiti needs its own 4–5 days and permit care — don't fold it into a SHORT trip
- April–June and September–December are the twin clean-season windows
