Hemis lies in the Leh district of Ladakh at about 3,600 m, 40 km from Leh — the village of the Hemis monastery, the largest gompa of Ladakh, set in the arid valley's landscape on the high plateau.

History & culture

The monastery's story runs with the 17th-century founding by the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal — the great gompa of the Drukpa tradition, with the monastery's treasury of the thangkas and the gold and silver stupas; the monastery's famous festival of the masked dances in June–July, with the region's history of the royal patronage, gives Hemis its place as Ladakh's great monastery.
