Hanle lies in the Changthang region of Ladakh at about 4,500 m, 100 km from Leh and 60 km from Nyoma — the high village of the Hanle monastery and the Indian Astronomical Observatory, its wide valley set in the arid plateau's open country.
History & culture
The village's story runs with the Changthang's Buddhist life — the 17th-century Hanle monastery of the Gelug tradition, with the village's role on the old trade routes of the high plateau; the modern story is the Indian Institute of Astrophysics's observatory — one of the world's highest astronomical sites, whose night skies made Hanle a famous stargazing destination, with the region's story of the Rupshu's herders completing the setting.
