Geography & terrain
Hampi lies in the boulder-strewn Tungabhadra basin of Karnataka — a surreal lunar landscape of giant granite tors. The river splits around the sacred Virupaksha island, with the ruined Vijayanagara capital spread over 26 km² of the north bank.
History & culture
Capital of the Vijayanagara empire (1336–1565), Hampi was one of the world's largest cities at its peak — home to a bazaar, a royal enclave and temples that the empire's wealth turned into stone orchestras. The 1565 Battle of Talikota left it a ghost city, and today its 1,600-plus ruins form a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Practical tips
- Rent an e-bike or scooter — Hampi's spread is too big to walk
- Carry water and a hat; most ruins have zero shade
- Overnight trains to Hospet fill up 2 weeks ahead on weekends
Frequently asked questions
Two full days covers the core ruins; a third lets you see Anegundi and the sunrise hills without rushing.
A small fee applies at the main monument group (Vittala etc.). The town streets and Virupaksha are free to walk.
Hampi island (river side) for backpacker cafés, or Hospet for hotels — auto/bus shuttles take 30 minutes.
Hampi at sunrise is the closest India comes to a lost civilisation — a vast, silent arena of boulders and broken temples with the Tungabhadra sliding past in golden light. The scale is disorienting: you walk through a market street that once sold diamonds, now just stones and a few monkeys. Every viewpoint produces a landscape that looks painted — the stone chariot, the musical pillars, the hilltop monkey temple with the city spread below. By sunset, the boulders glow orange and the coracles drift on the river, and the melancholy of a city that ended in one terrible afternoon settles over you. It is magnificent, humbling, and unlike anywhere else on earth.
