History & culture

The temple is one of the twelve jyotirlingas — the Shiva shrine of the legend of the Brahmin's devotion, with the temple's rebuilding in the 18th century after the earlier destructions; the shrine's five-storey shikhara and the carved panels, with its place in the region's pilgrimage, give Grishneshwar its jyotirlinga sanctity beside the Ellora's ancient caves.
