Golconda Fort lies 11 km west of Hyderabad in Telangana — the great fortress of the Qutb Shahi sultans, its four forts and the acoustic architecture set on a granite hill above the city's west.
History & culture
The fort's history runs from the 13th-century Kakatiya-era mud fort to the Qutb Shahi sultans' great stone fortress of the 16th–17th century — the capital of the Golconda kingdom and the diamond trade that named its mines; the fort's gate system, the Fateh Darwaza's acoustics and the palaces and the mosques of the interiors, with its fall to the Mughals in 1687, give Golconda its layered history of the Deccan.
