The town was founded in the 16th century by Guru Amar Das — the third Guru's seat, with the 84-step baoli of the legend that the recitation at each step frees the soul of the rebirth cycle; the town's role as the early centre of the Sikh community, with the Guru's reforms and the Gurdwara Baoli Sahib's place in the faith's history, gives Goindwal its old-Sikh character.
