The palace was built in the late 19th–early 20th century as the hunting lodge of the Bikaner rulers — the red sandstone retreat beside the lake, with its later life as the heritage hotel; the lake's wildlife of the wildfowl and the deer, with the estate's role in the region's shikar history, gives Gajner its royal-desert character, and the wildlife reserve's safari now draws the nature visitors.
