Gahirmatha lies on the coast of the Kendrapara district in Odisha, 80 km from Bhitarkanika and 130 km from Bhubaneswar — the marine sanctuary of the Olive Ridley turtles, its rookery beach and the sea's edge set on the state's northern coast near the Bhitarkanika's mangrove country.
History & culture
The sanctuary was declared in 1997 to protect the Olive Ridley nesting grounds — one of the world's great rookeries, where the turtles arrive in the hundreds of thousands for the mass nesting (arribada) of the winter months; the sanctuary's role within the Odisha marine protection, with the nearby river mouths and the fishing coasts, gives Gahirmatha its conservation story of the sea turtles.
