Fort Aguada stands on the headland at the mouth of the Mandovi river in North Goa, 18 km from Panaji — the 17th-century Portuguese fortress, its ramparts and the old lighthouse set above the beach of Sinquerim.
History & culture
The fort was built in 1612 to defend the Portuguese capital against the Dutch and the Marathas — the great bastion of the seaward defence, with its freshwater spring that gave the fort its name (agua); the fort's four-storey lighthouse and its later role as a prison in the Portuguese era, with the fortress's walls and the tunnel of the old structure, give Fort Aguada its colonial story above the Mandovi's mouth.
