Fatehpur Sikri lies 40 km west of Agra in Uttar Pradesh — the red-sandstone ghost city of Akbar, its palaces and the mosque set on the ridge above the old capital's plain, 55 km from Mathura.
History & culture
The city was founded in 1571 by Akbar as his new capital — built to honour the Sufi saint Salim Chishti after the birth of the heir, and abandoned within a decade when the water failed; the great Buland Darwaza gate, the Diwan-i-Khas and the tomb of the saint preserve the Mughal capital's red stone, and the city's UNESCO World Heritage status marks its place among the empire's great buildings.
