Diu Fort stands at the eastern point of the Diu island, overlooking the sea and the creek toward the mainland — a huge 16th-century Portuguese fortress of ramparts, bastions and a lighthouse set on the island's cliffs.
History & culture
The fort was built in 1535 by the Portuguese after their alliance with the local sultan — the stronghold of the colonial enclave that guarded the spice trade of the sea route; its three ramparts and the moat, the inside buildings of the old garrison and the lighthouse on the sea wall make the fort one of the Portuguese era's great Indian fortresses, with the cannons still facing the water.
