Geography & terrain
Dirang sits in a wide green valley of the West Kameng district, 130 km from Bomdila on the Tawang highway and 45 km east of Sela Pass — an apple-growing Monpa town strung along the Kameng's tributary, with the old Dirang fort village on the hill across the stream and the yak-and-orchard country climbing either bank.
History & culture
The Monpa fortress village — the Dirang Dzong — guarded this valley crossing for centuries, its stone houses and gates still intact on the hill; the town was also the historic halt of the Tibetan trade and prayer-wheel country, and the Sangti valley below holds the winter quarters of the black-necked crane, honoured guests of the district.
