Digha sits on the Bay of Bengal coast of Purba Medinipur district, West Bengal, 185 km south-west of Kolkata — Bengal's classic beach town on a flat sand spit where the sea meets the Shankarpur-Digha surf, ringed by casuarina groves and old fishing villages.
History & culture
The old Digha raised its first seaside resorts in the 1920s under the British — a coastal getaway with the marine science aquarium and the 'science city' additions following — and grew through the following century into Bengal's most-visited beach; its history is the simple family-holiday story of the state, with the seafood shacks and the sunset point carrying the tradition.
