Diamond Harbour sits on the west bank of the Hooghly river, 50 km south of Kolkata in South 24 Parganas — where the estuary widens toward the Bay of Bengal; a river-mouth town of ferry ghats, colonial-era bungalows and an old jetty looking across to the low Sundarban fringe.
History & culture
The town was a Portuguese trading post in the 17th century and grew under the British East India Company as the river gate of colonial Calcutta — the company's ships once anchored in its broad water; its banked ruins, the old church and the river-facing houses preserve the colonial water-world, while the town today is Kolkata's classic sunset river drive.
