Dholavira lies on the arid Khadir island of the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, 250 km from Bhuj — the ruins of one of the Indus Valley civilisation's great cities, its castle, reservoirs and the inscribed signboard set on the salt-desert's edge.

History & culture

The city was one of the Harappan civilisation's largest settlements, occupied from about 3000 BCE with its remarkable water systems — the stepped reservoirs of the desert that stored the rains; the site's famous inscribed signboard, the city's fortified castle and the graves of the necropolis give Dholavira its status as one of the Indus world's key excavated cities, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
