Dhauligiri lies 8 km south of Bhubaneswar in Odisha — the low hill of the Ashoka-era peace, its white stupa and the Daya river's plain below the hill's edge, a pilgrimage site of the Buddhist memory.
History & culture
The hill is the Kalinga war's site — where Ashoka's brutal 261 BCE conquest turned the emperor to the remorse and Buddhism that reshaped his rule; the modern white-vaulted Dhauligiri stupa, with the edicts and the rock surfaces of the hill, marks the place of the war's turning, and the Peace Pagoda's memorial gives the site its 20th-century form.
