Geography & terrain

Dharamshala lies in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh at about 1,400 m, 90 km from Pathankot — the hill town of the Dhauladhar's foot, its two parts (the old town and McLeod Ganj) set on the forested slopes above the Kangra valley.

History & culture

The town's modern history is the exile of the Tibetan government in 1959 — the Dalai Lama's seat at McLeod Ganj making it the home of the Tibetan government in exile; the earlier British-era cantonment and the town's tea and timber story give Dharamshala its layered past, with the Namgyal monastery and the Tibetan institutions now at the heart of the town.
