Dhankar lies in the Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh at about 3,894 m, 25 km from Kaza — the ancient monastery town perched on a high cliff between the Spiti and Pin rivers, its white-washed shrines set against the arid Trans-Himalayan mountains.
History & culture
The Dhankar Gompa dates to the 7th–12th century as the seat of the Spiti valley's rulers and one of the region's oldest monasteries; the temple's walls and its storeys clinging to the cliff, with the monk community's festivals, give Dhankar its centuries of Buddhist history above the valley's river.
