Daulatabad Fort crowns the conical hill 15 km north-west of Aurangabad in Maharashtra — the 13th-century citadel of Devagiri, its moats, walls and the Chand Minar tower rising above the Deccan's dry plain.
History & culture
Built as the Yadava capital Devagiri and remade by the Delhi sultanate when Muhammad bin Tughluq renamed the city Daulatabad — the failed capital move of the 14th century making it one of the great historical ironies of India; the fort's lower defences of the ‘Andheri' dark passage, the Chand Minar's dome and the Bharat Mata temple within the walls complete the layered citadel of three dynasties.
