History & culture
The Rajaraja Chola II built the Airavatesvara temple in the 12th century — the chariot-shaped shrine of Shiva whose sculpted wheel-stairways, the horse-drawn mandapas and the musical steps made it the gem of the Chola building age; inscribed with the great living Chola temples a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004, Darasuram remains the least-crowded of the delta's three grand shrines.
