Geography & terrain
Dahanu and Bordi lie on the northern Konkan coast of Maharashtra, where the coastal plain widens into a belt of sandy soil that is ideal for chikoo cultivation — a geography of low dunes, orchards and long beaches stretching between the sea and the tidal creeks of the northern coast. The coast here is flat and exposed, with the wide, gentle Bordi beach and the Dahanu creek's mangrove-fringed tidal flats, rich in wading birds. The region's warm, humid coastal climate, with heavy monsoon rainfall and dry winters, supports the orchards, and the shallow coastal waters and creek fisheries sustain the fishing villages along the shore. The proximity of the Ghats inland is distant here — the coast's character is entirely of the sea and the sand.
History & culture
Dahanu's identity is agricultural: it is the heart of India's chikoo (sapodilla) cultivation, a crop that reached India with the Portuguese in the 16th–17th centuries and whose first commercial orchards were planted at Gholwad in Dahanu taluka in 1898 — the town's economy, festivals and landscape all revolve around the small brown fruit. The region's deeper history includes its role in the salt trade and its coastal communities, but its most distinctive heritage is the Parsi settlement of Dahanu, one of the few remaining Parsi villages in India, established in the 19th century when the community settled the area's farms and coastal land; the village's fire temple, old houses and quiet lanes preserve a culture that is now a small, precious fragment of India's diversity. The nearby Tarapur plant, India's first nuclear power station, opened in 1969, adds a modern chapter to the coast's history.

Dahanu is a slow morning place: the orchards are green and tidy, the chikoo trees laden with fruit, and the farm walk is an education in the patience of growing things. The beach at Bordi is wide and empty, the waves long and gentle, and the sand seems to absorb sound as well as footprints. The Parsi village is the quiet surprise — neat old houses, verandas with bougainvillea, the fire temple's calm, and a pace of life that belongs to another century. The chikoos themselves — eaten sun-warm from the tree, impossibly sweet — are the weekend's true souvenir.
