Coorg is green in a way that feels liquid — rain in the mornings, then sun burning the mist off the estate rows, then rain again. The air smells of coffee flowers and wet cardamom, and every estate road ends at a gabled Kodava house with its distinctive corner finials, like a little temple. Afternoon chai is served with fresh pepper and banana chips, and the evenings roll in with the sound of crickets and distant temple drums. The best moments are unplanned — a hill of mist, a family of elephants on the forest road, the Cauvery at Talakaveri barely a trickle among stones.
