Chorao island lies in the Mandovi river of North Goa, 15 km east of Panaji — the largest island of the river, its mangrove channels, paddy fields and the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary held between the mini-bus's causeway and the ferry crossings.
History & culture
The island's history runs from the pre-Portuguese chiefdoms to the colonial-era church settlements — the villages of the island's green keeping their Portuguese-era churches and feast days; its modern fame is the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, India's oldest sanctuary on an island, named for the birdman of India and reached by the ferry of the river.
