Chitradurga Fort crowns the boulder hills of the Deccan's interior in Chitradurga district, 200 km from Bengaluru and 150 km from Hubballi — a granite fort of seven walls and nineteen gates, its kasaba town spread at the rock's foot.
History & culture
The Nayakas of Chitradurga held the fort through the 16th–18th centuries, their alliances with the Vijayanagara, Bijapur and Mysore powers written in the fort's gates; the walls' legend of Onake Obavva — the woman who held the fort's breach with her pounding-rod — and the Hyder Ali siege of 1779 carry the fort's heroic story.
