Chitkul sits at 3,450 metres in the Baspa valley of Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, 26 km from Sangla and 235 km from Shimla — the last Indian village of the Indo-Tibetan border, its wooden houses above the Baspa river's snow-fed water.
History & culture
The village's settlement runs with the Kinnauri trade routes of the old Himalayan exchange — the last village of the valley holding its trans-border past; its modern fame is the border-country tour, with the Baspa's walks, the apple orchards and the temple of the village saints making Chitkul the far point of the Kinnaur road.
