Chandigarh lies on a plain at the foot of the Shivalik hills, 250 km north of Delhi — Le Corbusier's planned capital, its grid of sectors, the Capitol's monuments and the green belts of the City Beautiful laid between the Punjab and Haryana states.

History & culture

Built after 1947 as the new capital of India's divided Punjab, the city took shape from 1952 under Le Corbusier and his team — the sector plan, the Capitol Complex and the tree-lined networks creating the modernist capital; the UNESCO inscription of 2016 recognized the city's architecture as the world's Corbusian site, with the Rock Garden's folk-mosaic city standing as its famous counter-story.
