Champhai lies on the eastern ridge of Mizoram at the Myanmar border, 200 km from Aizawl — a town of the Mizo hills' far edge, its rice terraces and vineyards set at 1,250 metres.

History & culture

The town's position on the old Chin Hills' trade-and-movement routes made it a border town of the region's tribes; its modern life holds the border market at Zokhawthar and the experimental vineyards that give Champhai its wine story, with the terrace fields and the graves of the old chiefs marking the town's settlement past.
