Champaner-Pavagadh lies at the foot of the Pavagadh hill in Panchmahal district of Gujarat, 50 km from Vadodara — the walled city and the hill fortress of a UNESCO World Heritage site, its mosques, gates and the Kalika temple above.
History & culture
The Pavagadh hill held the old trade-town's devotion before Mahmud Begada took the hillfort and built his new capital Champaner in 1484 — the Jami Masjid's grand prayer hall, the fortress gates and the step-wells recording the sultanate's building age; abandoned for Ahmedabad, the city kept its pre-Mughal architecture, inscribed as a World Heritage site in 2004.
