Bodh Gaya lies on the bank of the Niranjana (Falgu) river in Gaya district, Bihar, 100 km from Patna — a flat, sacred riverside plain built around a single great temple and the pipal tree that shelters it, ringed by the monasteries of a dozen Buddhist nations.

History & culture

Here, beneath the Bodhi tree, Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment in the 6th century BC, becoming the Buddha. The Mahabodhi Temple — a grand sandstone pyramid, restored across empires and recognised by UNESCO — houses the Vajrasana throne; the descendant of the original tree still shades the shrine, and the dharma's greatest pilgrimage has drawn kings and monks for 2,500 years.
