Bithoor lies on the right bank of the Ganga, 22 km north of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh — a quiet riverside town of ghats, ashrams and mango groves strung along a bend of the river, reached by the Kanpur–Bithoor road across the flat Ganga country.
History & culture
Bithoor is woven with two epics — legend marks it as the place where Brahma performed the Ashvamedha yagna (Brahmavart), and it was here that the infant Ganesha's head was joined after Shiva's curse, making it the holy site of the headless-Ganesha worship; in modern memory the town hosts the Valmiki Ashram — legend says it was here the sage wrote the Ramayana and gave shelter to Sita — and it became a cradle of the 1857 revolt as Nana Sahib's riverside capital before the British drove the Peshwa's heir out.
