Bishnupur district-town in Manipur sits on the flat lake country 25 km south of Imphal, surrounded by the lotus-ponds and marshland of the valley's southern table — the gateway settlement to Loktak lake and the old Vishnu shrines of the Moirang region.
History & culture
The town's origins are sacred — its name comes from the Vishnu temple (Bishnu) at its heart, tied to the Meitei kings' Vaishnavite patronage from the 15th–18th centuries; the region's history is also written at the nearby Khongjom (on the road north) and at Moirang, where the ancient Thangjing cult and later the INA's flag-raising of 1944 marked the town's layered past.
