Geography & terrain

Bikaner stands on the edge of the Thar desert in north Rajasthan, 330 km west of Delhi — a walled city of sandstone palaces on the flat sand-country, with the desert ringing the town and the old camel-breeding lanes running toward the Jaisalmer frontier.

History & culture

Founded in 1488 by the Rathore prince Rao Bika on the camel-trade routes, the city grew rich through its desert caravans; the Junagarh fort (1594) — unusually never breached and one of only forts not built on a hill — carries the Rajput-Mughal hybrid architecture of its kings; the Lalgarh palace (1902) finished the story in the Indo-Saracenic style. The nearby Deshnok temple's rat legend and the Ganga Golden Jubilee museum round out the town's layered past.
