Bhopal spreads across the Malwa plateau of Madhya Pradesh, centred on the great Bhojtal (Upper Lake) and the Lower Lake — a city of lakes, tree-lined avenues and old town gates, 380 km north of Nagpur on the state's central spine.
History & culture
Founded in the 11th century by the legendary Parmar Raja Bhoj (the Bhojtal's dams), and rebuilt in the 18th–19th centuries under a celebrated line of female Nawabs — Qudsia, Sikandar and Shah Jehan Begum — Bhopal mixes medieval lake-towns and nawabi palaces. Its modern layer, as the state capital, brought the great Taj-ul-Masajid, Bharat Bhavan's art campus and the lakeside promenades.
