Geography & terrain
Bhimbetka, 45 km south of Bhopal in Raisen district, is a low sandstone ridge of the Vindhyan country where some 750 natural rock shelters crowd the forested falls — a vast open-air gallery of prehistoric art set among boulders, streams and sal forest.
History & culture
The rock shelters of Bhimbetka carry some of the oldest paintings yet found on the Indian landmass — ochre, white and green figures of humans, animals and mythic scenes, believed by scholars to span from the Mesolithic to historical ages, some possibly beyond 30,000 years. Registered by UNESCO in 2003, the site's 'auditorium cave' with its great horse and bison panels is the anchor of the reserve.
