Geography & terrain

Bhimashankar sits at about 960 m in the Sahyadri range of Pune district, Maharashtra — a dark deodar-and-ebony forest pocket on the ridge between the Bhima river's source streams, reachable by the winding ghat roads from Pune (110 km) via the Khed ghat or from the Deccan side through Manchar.

History & culture

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the shrine believed to mark where Shiva manifested as a fiery pillar, worshipped here since medieval times under the Yadavas and later patrons; the current temple, in the Hemadpanthi style of the 13th century, carries the typical black-stone carvings of the Deccan, and the surrounding forest was among the first wildlife sanctuaries of Maharashtra (declared 1984) exactly to protect its giant squirrel and remote-tree canopy.

  • Best window: Oct–Mar
  • Connectivity: good 4G in towns

Practical tips

  • Monsoon (Jun–Sep) the waterfall drain is dramatic but roads are slick
  • Full-moon Mondays (Shravan) draw big crowds — weekday mornings are calm

Frequently asked questions

The temple is the draw, but the surrounding sanctuary's forest walks, viewpoints and its famous giant squirrels make a full nature-and-pilgrimage day.

Was this helpful?

The Khed Shivapur ghat is shorter but steeper; the Manchar route is longer but gentler — both are fine with a regular car.

Was this helpful?

October to March for clear ridge days; Shravan (August) for the festival energy but larger crowds.
