Geography & terrain
Here the Cauvery, having descended from Coorg, cuts through ancient granite gneiss to form a rugged gorge studded with rapids, boulder islands and deep emerald pools. The river marks a sharp ecological boundary: dry, spiny deciduous forest on the sun-facing slopes gives way to evergreen riparian gallery forest in the humid crevices, supporting spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, leopard and the occasional elephant crossing from the surrounding hills. The mahseer — a giant barb that can exceed 50 kg — is the river's keystone species, and the 2020s have seen serious stocking and conservation programmes aimed at reviving the wild population in these very stretches.
History & culture
The village is named after Bhima of the Mahabharata, who according to local legend washed his blood-stained hands in the Cauvery here after slaying the demon Bakasura — the event is commemorated in a small shrine at the riverbank. In the early 20th century, Bheemeshwari's gorges became a celebrated angling ground for the British, and the Cauvery Fishing Camp (established in the 1930s) hosted visiting fishermen and, later, heads of state. The river corridor was declared part of the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary in 1987 to protect the mahseer and the riparian forest. Today it stands as one of Karnataka's oldest continuous river-and-forest reserves, where the modern story of the mahseer's decline and its conservation effort — including restocking programmes in the 2020s — is still being written by biologists and anglers alike.

You hear the river long before you see it — a low continuous thunder that makes every conversation feel more urgent. The gorge walls are black and ancient-looking, and the water is the colour of weak tea after rain, sliding past boulders in muscular currents. By evening the mist comes off the water, the air fills with the smell of wet rock and drying leaves, and the camp fires up at the water's edge. It's a weekend of extremes — adrenaline on the river by day, complete stillness at night — and the sound of the Cauvery running becomes a kind of background music that you catch yourself missing for weeks afterwards.
