Bharatpur lies on the flat farm-country of eastern Rajasthan, 55 km west of Agra and 180 km south of Delhi — a walled district city on the Banganga country, best known as the gateway to the Keoladeo National Park's wetlands, a shallow engineered wetland ringed by dry thorn woodland.
History & culture
A Jat kingdom arose here from the early 18th century — Suraj Mal's Bharatpur with its famous mud-brick Lohagarh fort ('iron fort') that survived sieges; Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II-era water engineering turned an old irrigation basin into the Keoladeo bird sanctuary (a royal hunting reserve dating to 1726), which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 for its five hundred bird species and the great migrations the wetland hosts.

Keoladeo is a place you experience in silence: a cycle rickshaw or a slow walk, and the marsh does the rest.
